Chapter 24.1: Fault Isn’t On You But On Them
The youth’s face was pale and wane, his eyes looking like ones in an ink painting, tinged an umber shade like pigment used for faraway mountains. But there was no sparkle in those eyes at all, dejected and listless, that spirited vigor and steely mettle from before long gone from them.
Pain rose in Mu Wushuang’s heart seeing him like that.
He must be feeling utterly bitter and sad. Still so young, and he has already experienced falling down from such a high peak, straight into the pits down below. He had once enjoyed immense fame and the adoration of many, but had now been reduced to become such a frail weakling that was mute, getting used to being ignored and disregarded. Now, he even had to follow Mu Wushuang here to live under someone else’s roof, and put up with people rolling their eyes at him unwelcomingly.
When the original owner of Mu Wushuang’s body was just a well known useless bum, he still had to drag that weak and sickly body of his around to clear up the mess she stirred up everywhere, taking responsibility for them and also fight to survive under the second branch family’s endless exploitation and numerous nefarious schemes. He must have been dead tired living like that.
Mu Wushuang walked up to the youth, and gave him a huge bear hug.
“Yuheng, your Elder Sis will cure you of your condition.”
Her voice was grave and serious.
Mu Yuheng’s arms that were hanging by his sides slowly lifted up to embrace her back as he closed his eyes and tears spilled out. He then used a finger to trace out a single character on her back.
The character, ‘Regret’.
A lump rose up in Mu Wushuang’s throat, understanding the meaning that one single character carried.
Remorse, guilt and bitter regret.
Regretted that he agreed to that duel when he was overtaken by the exuberance of youth, and ended falling into a malicious trap, that caused him to fall from high up in the clouds and into the dirty mud, to become a useless powerless mute.
He lamented what if he had chosen to no go out on that day for the duel, things might very well be completely different for them today. They would at the very least not need to come seek shelter under someone else’s roof like this, and he would have been able to protect his elder sister, and not just watch on helplessly when she was almost killed.
The boy was going through a phase of severe self doubt and if that went on for too long, he would fall into despair, wallowing in pity and self blame before crawling into his own protective shell to hide from everyone.
Mu Wushuang patted him comfortingly on the back, as she said in a gentle voice to reassure him.
“You do not need to regret anything. None of it was your fault at all, and it’s on all those people. A kind hearted person like you will never be able to fully avoid the devious traps people such bad hearted people plot intentionally. You were just too blindingly bright and came in the way of others, which made them jealous of you. So, know that you did not commit any wrong at all. What’s more, do you not believe what I told you earlier? I said I will cure you completely. Trust me on this, Yuheng.”
