Chapter 1: Orphanage

She had no idea why she would suddenly dream about her days when she was younger.

Those days weren’t exactly the best, but at least she didn’t have to get involved in such carnage.

She was an orphan, the director of the orphanage had found her lying outside the entrance of the place.

It was winter time, in the southern region of the country. Though it wasn’t deadly cold, the weather was still pretty chilly at that time.

She heard from the director later on, when he found her, little Qingcheng was left out in the cold and her face had turned purple, her limbs ice cold. She was wrapped up in a tiny blankie and there was a note stuffed inside. Feng Qingcheng was written on it.

Noticing her weak breathing and the red lotus birthmark on her forehead, the director shook his head. She was an adorable child and the reason behind her abandonment must have been the birthmark on her forehead.

The director brought Feng Qingcheng into the orphanage out of kindness but they had a tight budget and couldn’t have been able to afford the medical expenses of a sickly child at that time. He could only let the heavens decide, she’d have to depend on herself to survive without medical attention.

If it were to be other children, they’d probably pass away under those circumstances but Feng Qingcheng was different. She miraculously survived the ordeal.

Feng Qingcheng wasn’t a personable child since young, but if one were to ignore the red lotus birthmark on her forehead, she’s actually pretty adorable looking.

When little Qingcheng gradually grew up, she would always try her best to present herself in the best way whenever she saw married couples appearing at the orphanage, looking to adopt a child. She wished that she could also have a complete family that could provide her with family warmth.

But whenever she appeared before the couples, their faces would blanch once they saw the red lotus birthmark on her forehead. The director would quickly lock her up in a tiny house and would only let her out once the couples left the orphanage.

After the same situation happened time after time, her personality changed. She became overly mature and reclusive, and even a little haughty. She would never behave like the other children in the orphanage, dolling up well in nice clothes to please the visitors at the orphanage, be it those looking to adopt or those who donated to the orphanage. She would always sit in one corner and led a solitary life, reading her book or just living in her own world, looking at the skies by herself without making any sound.

Little Qingcheng had to receive a fair bit of beating because of her behavior, she would always be bullied by the children who were older than her. Moreover, she wasn’t like the other children, she was perverse and headstrong, she would never try to sell herself in front of the visitors of the orphanage. The staff at the orphanage slowly grew tired of her and they would always hit her.

Little Qingcheng would hug herself and sob after being beaten up and injured all over at the start of the beatings. But as the beatings got more frequent, she went to tell the director about the beatings she had to suffer.

Her instincts told her that the director of the orphanage being so kind-looking would be kind and approachable, he must have a way to help her.

The director gathered all of the children and staff in the orphanage and questioned them about it, but everyone colluded and pushed all of the blame onto little Qingcheng. There was no way they could win the majority in the orphanage, the director chose to let the matter slide since he didn’t have any better solution too.

She had actually pondered over the issue, she couldn’t figure out why did her biological parents forsake her. Was it just because of the weird birthmark on her forehead? It was said that blood is always thicker than water, did they really abandon her just because she had a birthmark on her forehead?

But as time passed, she stopped crying and she never sought help from anyone else. She turned extremely quiet and spoke few words.

The happiest moment in her day would be to witness a mother and son living around the orphanage holding hands while walking back home together.

She would always think, if she actually had a mother by her side, would her mother be just like that lady who lived around the orphanage, holding her child’s hand tenderly while carrying her purse and groceries in the other hand. The child would have a new toy in his hand sometimes…

Little Qingcheng would always hide her petite figure behind the door, watching them leave.

It was only after quite a long time, the mother and son never appeared. But their smiles were the greatest thing that Feng Qingcheng could never forget about, it tugged at her heartstrings.

Finally, she realized that keeping quiet without retaliating would only allow boost the egos of those who were bullying her. They would only turn even more brazen, she understood that she shouldn’t tolerate their ways and she eventually didn’t. She stopped allowing them to climb over her head.

Whenever the children at the orphanage bullied her, she would then return them the beating, probably even worse than what they did to her. If she didn’t have an edge over them in terms of physical fights, she would start to strike up internal strifes between them. Everyone started to fear her after then.

The staff at the orphanage slowly grew tired of trying to compel her into behaving well, they started to just let her be and little Qingcheng became the overlord of the orphanage, at the age of six years old.

The director actually wanted to send her away, but she always ended up wounding herself all over despite her good looks. She even chose to cut her hair really short, just like a child who lived in the jungle.

Even until she was eight years old, she still wasn’t adopted by anyone.

One day, little Qingcheng was biting on a green foxtail and sunbathing in the yard, the warm sun rays beamed down on her and it felt really nice.

But the sun was blocked away all of a sudden. Little Qingcheng opened her eyes irritably and noticed a man clad in a black suit with black sunglasses on, he pointed at her and told the director, “I’ve decided on her!”

Her? The director was aghast as he looked at the man in black. “Are you sure about her? She’s the most disobedient child here, we have many other children who are more well behaved.”

“Here’s five million dollars, we’re taking her away.” Once he noticed that little Qingcheng was going to escape, he placed a knife against her neck and little Qingcheng’s vision went dark.
